I've hauled motorcycles in pickup trucks for most of my life, and one thing I've learned is that a bike that feels perfectly secure when you leave the driveway isn't necessarily going to stay that way.
You load the bike.
Pull it against the front of the truck bed.
Tighten the tie-down straps.
Give everything a good shake.
Looks solid.
Then you drive 100 miles, hit some rough pavement, pull over for fuel and discover one of your straps isn't nearly as tight as it was when you left.
What happened?
There can be several reasons, but one of the biggest culprits is something many riders don't think about:
The front wheel moved.
Your Motorcycle Isn't Sitting Still Back There
It's easy to forget how much movement is taking place in the bed of a pickup while you're driving.
Every pothole, expansion joint, rough section of highway, dirt road and driveway entrance transfers movement into the truck—and ultimately into the motorcycle.
The bike's suspension absorbs some of it.
The tires absorb some of it.
The tie-down straps absorb some of it.
But the front wheel is also constantly being encouraged to move.
If that front tire is simply pushed against the front wall of the truck bed without anything keeping it straight, repeated vibration and movement can cause the handlebars and front wheel to begin turning from side to side.
It may only move a little.
But a little can matter.

Why Does a Turning Front Wheel Matter?
Think about what happens when you secure a motorcycle.
Your tie-down straps create opposing forces that hold the motorcycle in position.
When the motorcycle is upright, the front wheel is straight and the straps are properly positioned, everything works together.
Now allow that front wheel and handlebars to turn.
The relationship between the motorcycle and the tie-down points changes.
As that geometry changes, a strap that was tight when you loaded the bike can lose tension.
Once one strap begins losing tension, the motorcycle has more opportunity to move.
More movement can create even more slack.
That's when a motorcycle that seemed rock solid when you left home can suddenly become a lot less secure.
I've Seen This Problem for Nearly 30 Years
This wasn't something I learned from an engineering textbook.
I learned it hauling motorcycles.
When I was younger, I raced motocross and transported dirt bikes to tracks and riding areas several times a week.
I was constantly loading and unloading motorcycles from the back of my pickup.
Back then, the normal way to haul a dirt bike was pretty simple.
Put the front tire against the front of the truck bed, find whatever factory tie-down points were available, crank down the straps and go.
It worked.
Sort of.
But after doing it over and over, I started noticing all the shortcomings.
Front wheels moved.
Tie-down straps loosened.
Factory tie-down points were rarely where I wanted them.
And the front bulkhead of the truck bed took all the force from the motorcycle being pulled against it.
There had to be a better way.
That became one of the reasons I designed the original Bed Buddy Moto Rack in 1997.

A Wheel Chock Does More Than Hold the Tire
When most people look at a motorcycle wheel chock, they probably think its only job is to tell the front tire where to sit.
That's certainly part of it.
But there's another job that's just as important.
Keep that wheel straight.
When I designed the Bed Buddy, I positioned the three TIG-welded wheel slots specifically to capture and stabilize the front wheel.
Once the motorcycle is loaded, the wheel can't wander back and forth across the front of the truck bed.
It stays where it's supposed to stay.
Straight.
That gives you a much more stable starting point for securing the motorcycle.

Tie-Down Location Matters Too
Keeping the wheel straight is only part of the equation.
Where you attach the tie-down straps matters just as much.
Factory truck-bed tie-down points weren't designed specifically for transporting motorcycles.
Sometimes they're too low.
Sometimes they're too far forward or rearward.
And when you're trying to haul two or three motorcycles, things can get interesting very quickly.
I've seen straps routed through wheels, around tires and crisscrossed from one side of the truck bed to the other just to find an attachment point.
I call it tie-down spaghetti.
It makes loading harder, unloading harder and can cause unnecessary wear on the straps themselves.
That's why the Bed Buddy doesn't just stabilize the front wheels.
I also put the tie-down loops where they're actually useful for securing motorcycles.
The strategically located center tie-down point is especially important when hauling multiple bikes because it eliminates much of the crisscrossing that happens when trying to use factory truck-bed anchors.
The idea was simple:
Control the wheel and put the tie-down points where they belong.
The Same Principle Led to the Moto Vise
Years later, when I developed what eventually became the Hybrid Moto Rack, I approached front-wheel stability a little differently.
The Hybrid needed to be modular.
Customers wanted the ability to add, remove and reposition components depending on what they were hauling.
That led me to develop the Moto Vise Wheel Chock.
Instead of permanently welding the wheel chock into one position like the Bed Buddy, the Moto Vise attaches to the Hybrid track and can be positioned wherever the rider needs it.
It's also width adjustable, allowing it to accommodate different tire widths.
The product changed.
The basic principle didn't.
Keep the front wheel straight and give the rider properly positioned tie-down points.

What About Bigger Motorcycles?
This principle isn't limited to dirt bikes.
Whether you're hauling a 220-pound motocross bike or a much larger adventure or street motorcycle, controlling the front wheel is important.
In fact, as motorcycles become larger and heavier, I become even less interested in allowing the front of the bike to move around during transport.
A properly supported front wheel gives you a predictable foundation for securing the motorcycle regardless of its size.
That's why both the Bed Buddy and Hybrid systems were designed to work with motorcycles of virtually all sizes.

Should You Still Check Your Straps?
Absolutely.
I don't care what rack, wheel chock or tie-down system you're using.
Whenever I'm transporting motorcycles, I consider it good practice to check everything after getting underway—especially on a long trip.
Straps can settle.
Suspension can settle.
Loads can shift.
If you've traveled across rough roads, it's worth taking a few seconds when you stop for fuel to put your hand on the straps and make sure everything still feels the way it should.
A good motorcycle transport system reduces movement.
It doesn't replace common sense.
It's About Creating a Complete System
One thing I've learned after nearly 30 years of designing motorcycle transport products is that there isn't one magic component that makes a motorcycle secure.
It's a system.
You want:
- A solid mounting foundation
- A controlled front wheel
- Properly located tie-down points
- Good-quality tie-down straps
- Proper strap tension
- A motorcycle that's positioned correctly
When all of those things work together, transporting motorcycles becomes remarkably simple.
That's really what I've been trying to accomplish since I built the first Bed Buddy.
Simple. Safe. Secure.

If you're hauling a motorcycle with the front tire simply pushed against the front wall of your truck bed, pay attention to that wheel the next time you stop.
Is it still perfectly straight?
Are the handlebars exactly where they were when you left?
Do your tie-down straps have exactly the same tension?
If not, you've probably just seen firsthand why controlling the front wheel matters.
Whatever system you use to transport your motorcycles, start with a stable front wheel and good tie-down geometry.
Everything else gets easier from there.
